Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce Supports the Village’s Pilot Project: Community Space @ Short Street

The Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce proudly supports the Village of Yellow Springs’ pilot project: Community Space @ Short Street, a visionary step toward building community and economic vitality in the heart of our downtown. 

Over the past few years – and most notably this year, our local economy has experienced a wave of emotional shifts. Some businesses have closed their doors while others have stepped in to take root. Through these seasons of transition, the Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce, alongside other organizations committed to economic development, recognized the need for intentional actions that strengthen our business community and restore meaningful foot traffic to downtown. 

In response, a series of micro-campaigns designed to keep downtown vibrant were launched. One effort aligned with this vision is the activation of Short Street into a pilot Community Space, a temporary, multi-functional public area dedicated to interaction, relaxation, and inspiration. Although the space has been previously identified for various uses, this pilot represents a timely and necessary approach to reconnecting residents, inviting visitors to stay longer, and exploring fresh new opportunities for commerce and community to intersect. 

Studies show that small towns with accessible, central gathering spaces see up to a 25% increase in foot traffic to nearby businesses, according to the Project for Public Spaces. Additionally, data from Main Street America reveals that interactive public areas can lead to a 20–30% increase in local spending, and that 80% of residents feel more positively connected to their community when these spaces exist. 

Creating space for possibility and giving ourselves permission to explore it is how communities vet, deliberate, and ultimately adopt great ideas. It’s also how they gain the wisdom to rule out what doesn’t serve them. Either way, it’s a vital part of the process.

We understand that if this pilot becomes a permanent feature, that transition will come only after thorough evaluation and community input on key issues such as parking, accessibility, foot traffic patterns, and long-term maintenance.
