An interview with Perk Reichley, Owner-Reichley Insurance.
How did your story Begin? What inspired you to take the leap into entrepreneurship?
I am a third-generation insurance agent and business owner and follow a long line and heritage of personal service to my clients and community that was established by my grandfather and father.
In addition to running this small business, what other hats do you wear?
I sit on the board of directors for the following organizations – Dayton YMCA, Ohio Insurance Agents Association, Xenia Senior Center and love to be involve in service projects that improve our community.
What do you love most about owning and running a business near Yellow Springs?
While not actually located in Yellow Springs, the connection to all of my clients in Yellow Springs is what I love the most. Each is unique and special in their own way and helping them with their risk management and insurance policies as well as assisting after a claim event brings value to me and my staff at the agency.
What services of yours do people love most – and what makes them special to you?
No one loves insurance products or the process of purchasing them. We assist our clients with understanding and selecting what works best for them and then supporting these complex coverages through the years with them. We try to make it more personal and easier by giving them the information they need to make good decisions and people they can connect with to discuss them thoroughly. We handle Home, Auto, Umbrella, Life, Health, Business Insurance, Bonds, Professional Liability, Commercial Auto and many other types of coverage.
What is the biggest challenge your business is facing right now, and how are you working through it?
The lack of personal attention in the service industry is challenging. Being able to remain personal with our clients while trying to maintain an ever-increasing automated transaction process is our greatest challenge. The amount of change that is going on in the world and the insurance industry is difficult to explain and manage on behalf of our clients.
Taking Care of People has always been our “WHY”. I know I need to be a good steward of the resources of the business, but when you show up and take care of people, the rest takes care of itself.

When you’re not at your business, where is your favorite place to shop, eat, or unwind in Yellow Springs?
Anytime I am in Yellow Springs for a meeting with a client, whether at their home or place of business, it is special to me. The village has a relaxed atmosphere that seems to slow things down a bit so we can catch our breath. I always look forward to a client lunch at the Hotel or seeing people I know or serve while walking the sidewalks downtown.
Where do you call home, and how does that community influence the way you do business?
I grew up in Xenia, work in Beavercreek where the office is located and now live between Xenia and Jamestown in the country. I love this entire area of Ohio and all 4 seasons we experience. Since what I do involved protecting people and property, I guess liking where you live and the different communities and what they offer to those that live and work in them, gives me a satisfaction that I am helping to protect them in a small way for the current and future generations.
What are the top three things you love most about being a small business owner?
- Making my own decisions and injecting my own values.
- The ability to do what is right and not what is expected.
- Feeling a sense of accomplishment and purpose at the end of each business day.
What’s something else that people might not know about you or your business that you wish they did?
We love what we do and who we do it for. While that is a bit cliche’, it’s true. I have described our business as more a dysfunctional family that a corporate office. We are real people that truly care about those we serve.
Can you share a favorite memory or moment with a customer or client that has stayed with you?
I had a client in Cedarville, OH that had her farm destroyed by a tornado many years ago. The restoration company put a tarp over her roof to prevent further damage. She called my house one night to ask who would help her re-attached the tarp that blew off during the night in the strong winds. She was panicked and stressed about more damage to her home. My wife and I headed over to the house to see if we could help. Amid all the wind and the flapping tarp, the 3 of us were able to get a ladder out of her garage, some nails and a hammer and get the tarp nailed back down. We were soaked from the light rain but were all laughing at the 3 of us out there trying to get this completed.
I will always remember this as the time we stopped being insurance agents and just became family and friends with each other.
