Meet Henderson Hudson Dezign and Hudson Sculpture - Heart of the Business

An interview with Debbie Henderson.

Debbie Henderson & Jon Hudson
How did your story Begin? What inspired you to take the leap into entrepreneurship?

Jon and I have always been artists: design, theatre, sculpture, clothing history. Our beginning as a business together was when we met 40 years ago. We’ve been creatively designing and constructing ever since.

In addition to running this small business, what other hats do you wear?

We are committed to community involvement and value family & friend togetherness.

What do you love most about owning and running a business near Yellow Springs?

We love getting to know our fellow Yellow Springers and using this solid, supportive base to work around the country and the world.

What pieces do people love most – and what makes them special to you?

Jon’s large scale sculptures can be seen in 27 countries as well as in neighboring towns. Our Men’s Hat Exhibit has crossed the country, while interior and stage designs have lived in a variety of homes and theatres.

What is the biggest challenge your business is facing right now, and how are you working through it?

A big challenge is finding more venues in which to exhibit and work.

It is an exhibit designed as an investigation of a familiar object -- the man's hat. everyone has one and most people wear one for some special occasion. Most people don't know the history or how they are made our even who wore them. this exhibit is designed to stimulate the audience to take a deeper look at a most common object and learn about its range of significance. This project was conceived and executed by Debbie Henderson Ph.D.

All of the shops and eateries in Yellow Springs offer their own unique merchandise and delicious food. That is what makes this town so wonderful—the variety!

Where do you call home, and how does that community influence the way you do business?

We are Yellow Springers through and through. This is HOME. We feel the continued support of our community.

What are the top three things you love most about being a small business owner?
  1. Personal creativity.
  2. Flexible work schedules.
  3. Flexible work locations.

What’s
something else that people might not know about you or your business that you wish they did?

Each client is special in their own way and are treated as such.

Can you share a favorite memory or moment with a customer or client that has stayed with you?

There are really too many great memories to choose one. Seeing a happy client is always the BEST part of any job.
