Meet Singapore Seahorse Coin Jewelry: Heart of the Business
How did your story begin? What inspired you to open your doors and take the leap into entrepreneurship?
My Dad was a coin collector and metal detecting was his favorite hobby. I grew up going to coin shops with him. When he passed away, I felt inspired to make jewelry with some of his coins. This inspiration led to an organic idea to begin making jewelry with world coins. I was already self employed, owning a Holistic Health Center in downtown Tipp City. For fun, I put a batch of about 20 coin necklaces out for sale in my waiting room. That evolved into what you see today!
What do you love most about owning and running a business in Yellow Springs?
I love the energy of all of the people who come through my shop. Everyone is here to have a fun day, and that energy is contagious.
What items do people love most – and what makes them special to you?
People love my world coin jewelry selection. We all have somewhere in the world we have deep feelings towards, and my jewelry creates a bridge to those places. My entire shop is intentioned with little things people will find connection with- for themselves or gifts for others.
What’s something else that people might not know about you or your business that you wish they did?
If you come in and see something you like, but would like a different chain, length of chain or bracelet, most things can be changed on the spot.
“A customer once told me that her sister was a nun at the Vatican. Never a boring conversation at my shop!”
When you’re not at your business, where is your favorite place to shop, eat, or unwind in Yellow Springs?
You’ll find me trying on clothes at Kismet, ordering a Milky Way at Dino’s, having breakfast with my family at Mills Park Hotel or studying my Tibetan language courses on my laptop in the Emporium.
What are the top three things you love most about being a small business owner?
1) I like only answering to myself
2) I love the energy of the visitors to the village
3) Being able to express myself and connect with others through my work
What is the mission or heart behind your business…the “why” that keeps you going?
Connection. I have a calling to help others that used to have an outlet through my holistic health center. It now shines through when I connect with my customers through their stories, my stories, and seeing how they connect with my jewelry.
What is the biggest challenge your business is facing right now, and how are you working through it?
Colder weather comes less foot traffic. I’m staying positive that my regular customers and new connections I’ve made throughout the year will come in for holiday shopping.
In addition to running this small business, what other hats do you wear?
I’m a wife, mom to a 1st grader and Tibetan calligraphy and language student.
Where do you call home, and how does that community influence the way you do business?
I’ve lived in Yellow Springs for almost 10 years! This community has encouraged my own personal growth into being fully who I am as an entrepreneur, being able to find connection with all different types of people through my products.
