Meet Tracy Hunt of Turning Inward Counseling - Heart of the Business
How did your story begin? What inspired you to open your doors and take the leap into entrepreneurship?
I reached a point in my professional life where I was successful on paper, but something important was missing. The work I was doing paid the bills and made sense from the outside, but it didn’t feel authentic to who I truly am. As I grew older and reflected on what I might regret someday, I knew I’d regret not returning to my passion, counseling and helping people, but doing it in a way that aligned with my values. That’s what led me to open Turning Inward Counseling: a place where I could help others find meaning, balance, and a deeper understanding and acceptance of themselves as they heal from life’s challenges.
What do you love most about owning and running a business in Yellow Springs?
What I love most about owning and running a business in Yellow Springs is the sense of community and the abundance of local resources right outside my office door. Being in the heart of downtown means I can grab a coffee or lunch, pick up office supplies, visit the library, or take a peaceful walk in nature between appointments, all within walking distance. There’s an energy here that’s both inspiring and grounding, and I truly appreciate being part of such a vibrant, supportive village.
Where do you call home, and how does that community influence the way you do business?
I feel fortunate to live and work in a community that values mindfulness, creativity, and connection. That spirit influences how I approach my work every day grounded, genuine, and focused on creating a safe space for people to slow down and turn inward. The supportive, down-to-earth nature of this area reminds me how important it is to care for both ourselves, natures, and our communities.
What offerings do people love most – and what makes them special to you?
People appreciate the option to meet in person, and I’m grateful to offer a quiet, comfortable space where they can truly exhale. Counseling is my service, and I think what clients value most is the calm, cozy atmosphere and the feeling of being seen, heard, and respected. While I know I won’t be the right fit for everyone, I always encourage people to keep looking until they find the therapist who feels right for them. It’s not about competition, it’s about supporting each person in finding the help and healing they deserve.
What’s something else that people might not know about you or your business that you wish they did?
I opened Turning Inward Counseling in 2017 and for a time also had a second office in Centerville. After some reflection, I decided to focus entirely on my Yellow Springs location, and I’m really glad I did! It feels like the perfect fit for my work and the people I serve. My connection to the area goes even further back, I completed my counseling internship at Antioch College in 2007, the year before it closed, and earned my undergraduate degree from Antioch University – McGregor (before it was called “Midwest”). I’ve been a long-time fan of Yellow Springs, and over the years I’ve grown both personally and professionally here.
“I understand how powerful it can be to feel seen and supported, and that’s what keeps me going.“
When you’re not at your business, where is your favorite place to shop, eat, or unwind in Yellow Springs?
There are so many wonderful places in Yellow Springs that it’s hard to choose just one! I love grabbing a meal or coffee at spots like Sunrise Café, The Emporium, Bentino’s, Current Cuisine, or The Winds. You’ll also find me at Tom’s Market, the library, or taking a walk through Glen Helen or around Ellis Pond. I’m a bit of a minimalist and not a big shopper, but I truly enjoy supporting and frequenting our local independent businesses, they’re such an essential part of what makes this village special.
What are the top three things you love most about being a small business owner?
What I love most about being a small business owner is the independence and sense of sovereignty it brings. I get to make decisions that align with my values, set my own schedule, and shape my practice in a way that feels authentic. I also appreciate having meaningful connections with local colleagues while enjoying the quiet focus that comes with running my own space. It’s incredibly rewarding to build something true to who I am without the politics or distractions that can come with larger systems.
What is the mission or heart behind your business…the “why” that keeps you going?
The heart behind my work is simple, I truly love what I do! I get to meet incredible people and walk alongside them as they work toward healing and self-understanding. It’s deeply meaningful, and I feel grateful to do this every day. I’m always learning, growing, and exploring new approaches so I can meet people where they are and offer support that fits their unique needs. Having navigated my own mental health journey, I understand how powerful it can be to feel seen and supported, and that’s what keeps me going.
What is the biggest challenge your business is facing right now, and how are you working through it?
As a solo provider, one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is navigating the complexities of working with insurance. Over time, I’ve realized that it’s not a sustainable model for my business, so I’m transitioning to a self-pay system. Clients can use credit cards or HSA/FSA cards, and I offer a flexible sliding scale of $85–$125 per session where people choose what amount works best for their circumstances. It’s an adjustment, but one that allows me to focus more on quality care and less on administrative hurdles.
In addition to running this small business, what other hats do you wear?
I focus on protecting my energy while still finding ways to give back and connect with the community. I host a monthly networking group for area mental health professionals, donate blood, contribute to the Yellow Springs Food Pantry each month, volunteer at events like the Yellow Springs Street Fair and the upcoming Thanksgiving Dinner, and support organizations like Who’s Hungry. Even on a smaller scale, it feels meaningful to help and stay connected locally.
Can you share a favorite memory or moment with a customer or client that has stayed with you?
One of my favorite moments is when clients share that our time together has been helpful. It always warms my heart, and I’m deeply honored to be part of their journey, even for a short time. It reminds me of our human need for connection and how important it is for mental wellbeing because we don’t heal in isolation. When someone reaches out for support, it’s such a meaningful and positive step, and I feel grateful to witness that courage and growth.
