Supporting Youth, Strengthening Community: How One Partnership is Investing in Yellow Springs

When businesses align with community initiatives in creative and meaningful ways, they become more than places to shop; they become part of the experience fabric of the community.

Communities thrive when organizations, businesses, and residents come together around a shared purpose. The launch of the Shop Local Perks Pass is an example of what can happen when local partnerships are designed to create benefits that extend well beyond a single organization.

Created through a collaboration between the Yellow Springs Athletics Boosters Club, the Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce, and participating Chamber member businesses, this YS sports card connects support for local student-athletes with opportunities to engage more deeply with the Yellow Springs business community.

Beginning now and continuing through the end of 2026, cardholders can enjoy exclusive perks at participating local businesses while helping generate support for YSHS athletics. From wellness and fitness to specialty food and beverages, the program encourages residents to discover and revisit the businesses that make downtown Yellow Springs unique.

For the Chamber, the initiative represents more than a discount card. It reflects the power of local collaboration to strengthen both the community and the local economy.

“When businesses align with community initiatives in creative and meaningful ways, they become more than places to shop, they become part of the experience fabric of the community. That’s how we build a stronger local economy: by creating partnerships that invest in people, strengthen local businesses, and give residents more reasons to connect with one another.”
— Phillip O’Rourke, Executive Director, Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce

The initiative also highlights an important principle of community economic development: every local purchase has the potential to create a ripple effect. Supporting neighborhood businesses helps sustain local jobs, encourages entrepreneurship, and contributes to a vibrant downtown that serves residents and visitors alike. When those same purchases also help fund opportunities for local students, the impact reaches even further.

As the new “sports card” enters distribution, community members may see local student-athletes and volunteers sharing information about the program and accepting $20 donations. Each card represents an opportunity to invest in two important parts of Yellow Springs: the next generation of student-athletes and the locally owned businesses that help define the character of the community.

The Yellow Springs Chamber is proud to support initiatives that strengthen connections between business, education, and community. Partnerships like the Shop Local Perks Pass demonstrate that when local organizations work together with a shared vision, the entire community benefits.
